MATHEWS MEMORIAL LIBRARY
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
November 14, 2017

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Steve Wilson, Chairman, at 5:00 p.m.


ATTENDING: Jo Anna Brown, Charles Ingram, Reed Lawson, Jim Pavik, Mary Sampson, Carolyn Taylor, and Steve Wilson. Also present was Bette Dillehay, Library Director.


WELCOME TO NEW MEMBER: The Board welcomed new member Jim Pavik.


MINUTES: The Sept. 5, 2017 board meeting minutes were approved as presented.


REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR: The attached report covers the period Sept. 6, 2017 - November 14, 2017. Also attached are the Operating Expenditures Report as of November 14, 2017 and the Activity Report for October 2017. Additionally, the Director on behalf of the staff congratulated Jim Pavik on his appointment to the library Board of Trustees. She explained the realignment of staff salaries as positions have changed. The Director announced that MML had been the recipient of $2500 from the Mathews Community Foundation fund that is advised by Mary Wade Smith. She explained in greater detail the process involved in completing the Bibliostat submission due November 15th, the grant proposal by MML to the Institute of Museums and Library Services for $15,000 (acceptance to be announced next June), the well-received presentation by the Director at the Virginia Library Association Conference, the resolution of the age restrictions in Teen Territory and library programs for September through November. In regard to the Teen Territory issue, an advocacy group has been formalized.


REPORT FROM THE FRIENDS: Chairman Wilson attended the general membership meeting held earlier in the day and the Director outlined the Coalition4Kids program.


OLD BUSINESS: None


NEW BUSINESS:
• Deck the Halls, on Sunday, November 26th at 2 p.m., will herald the beginning of the holiday season, the theme of which is "Do You Hear What I Hear?"
• The commission that sponsors the WWI/WWII Profile of Courage Tour has been invited to visit Mathews County. This traveling exhibit is housed in a trailer, and it is hoped it could be placed in front of the library. In February, a team from the commission will evaluate the site and, if selected, the tour would be in the county August 5th and 6th.
• A brick honoring former chairman William F. Story will be added to the sidewalk in front of the youth wing. The FOL will be asked to donate the brick.
