Sea People

Lemonade Lecture - Pioneers of the Sea - July 22

Have you ever wished you could go to sea in a boat and visit a far-away land or thought about how exciting it must be to be a sailor or a fisherman on a big boat?  Today, the real story of boats and ships and the people who sail on them will be told by a visitor from the Mariners’ Museum.  You will hear of the adventures of long-ago sailors who navigated across the oceans to explore new lands or who fought in great naval battles.  You will learn about different types of boats and instruments that were used in the past and those that are used today to travel by water.

Tales To Be Told - Ahoy There! - July 23

Sailors are also creatures of the sea.  Come hear wonderful talks about their voyages that take them to far places.  View a flyer  (pdf) about the Woven Yarns program.

Creative Activities - Signals Ahead - July 24

Flags used at sea for sending messages between ships have very special meanings. They can spell out short messages and individual flags and various combinations of flags have special meanings. In today’s session, you will create your own message by making flags like those used on ships.

Discovery Day - Mariner's Museum "Sea Legends" - July 25

In Newport News we will visit the Mariners’ Museum, a place “filled to the crow’s nest” with boats from around the world, ship models and treasures that tell the exciting story of ships and their history.  Pictures of famous pioneers of the sea, their boats and the treasures they were seeking are on display.  Using a large floor map of the oceans and seas, you can trace their exciting adventures.
